WE'RE NUMBER TWO!!!

Atlantic Cup 2010 Finalists

Monarchs notched a 3-2 victory over Lakeshore SC of Canada in the tournament semi-finals and fell to MFC of Maryland 2-7 in the championship game of the Atlantic Cup, to finish in 2nd place and earn Finalist honors in the U-12 division.

Monarchs Finish First in VSL

With their 5-0 victory over VA Rush Academy White on Nov. 21, the Monarchs finished with a perfect 8-0-0 record in their first Virginia Soccer League season. The 24 points in the standings gave them a 5-point cushion on the second place team. For the season, the Monarchs outscored their league opponents 54-9. Monarchs allow ony 2 goals in four games while outscoring their opponents by 17 for the weekend. The Monarchs were particularly impressive in Sunday's first game, which matched the division's two unbeaten teams, and was essentially for the tournament championship in the round-robin format. After falling behind 0-1 early, the Monarchs scored goals in the 19th and 41st minutes, both off of assists, and relied on strong defense, including five saves to seal the victory. With the four wins, the Monarchs moved their unbeaten streak to 14 straignt matches (13 wins and 1 tie).

For the season, the Monarchs have scored 49 goals and given up only 9 in seven games. The victory secured a first place league finish with one game remaining.

Monarchs scored in the championship game's first minute and gave up a goal on a penalty kick for a 1-1 halftime tie. The Monarch's converted on a corner kick to take the lead in the second half, and added an extra goal in the final 90 seconds of a hard-fought match with the Rampage from Fredericksburg. The Monarchs allowed only two goals in four tournament matches, both on penalty kicks.

Monarchs finish first in their group after going to the third tie-breaker with the Fury (Goals Scored). The win over the Strikers was the Monarchs' 60th all-time. The win and tie extended the Monarchs' streak to 13 straight matches without a loss.

TASL TOURNAMENT MAY 1-2


LOCATION \ DIRECTIONS
All games will be played at Churchland Park, 4100 Cedar Lane, Portsmouth.
Avoid any routes that take you through the Downtown Tunnel (I-264 West). It will be closed this weekend.

Below are directions using I-64 to I-664. Please plan to arrive early, since traffic could be very unpredictable with the tunnel closing in the area.

Take I-64 toward Suffolk. At the end of I64 take I-664 going toward Newport News. Continue until you come to the Route 164 exit. Take this exit toward Portsmouth. Continue on Route 164 until you come to the Cedar Lane exit (between 2 and 3 miles). Take the Cedar Lane exit and turn left onto Cedar Lane.

Cedar Lane will cross over I-164. Once you cross I-164, you will approach Churchland Park. There is a fire-station at the corner of Cedar Rd. and River Shore Rd. You will see the Churchland Soccer Complex just behind the fire-station.

Once at the corner of Cedar Rd. and River Shore Rd.:
1) - You can turn left here for parking at Churchland Middle School (first right) or continue to Churchland Academy parking lot. (Second right). 2) – You can continue up Cedar Lane and park at Churchland High School on the right (can cross over on foot behind Churchland Middle School via sidewalk). 3) – You can continue up Cedar Lane and turn left just before the Craney Island USCG facility entrance. This road wraps around the tennis courts to the back side of the soccer complex. There is parking all along this road – but tends to be crowded.

Please plan for the players to stay at the field site between games on Saturday. We will set up a tent, and eat together and relax between matches. We'll lock-in food plans with everyone Friday night at practice.
